I saw a friend of my best friend's brother post a video on his feed but I didn't give much thought to it. Like a month or two later, I don't know why, I got curious and went to his timeline to watch the video and it was awesome. It was a gush of fresh air... but that's not the song I'm posting today.
The song I'm posting today came out some months later and became my favorite instantly. Not only because the song perse but also because I find the video really cool.

I kinda feel the song has power in it. The Mongolian deep throat singing is very... tribalistic and transmits a sort of energy that you can't find even in guttural death metal songs. This feels like it comes from the soul... and the video compliments the song so nicely!

Grab a nice pair of headphones, turn off the lights and listen to the drums, the Mongolian guitars, and every other autochthonous instrument the band has for you. Enjoy every detail and lose yourself in this feast!

Without more ado, here is the song.

It's funny how our tastes in music have not changed but broadened. I used to love power metal and power metal only, I used to think my taste in music was vastly superior and one day I started to listen to some other music and appreciate it. I guess my tastes have matured... or at least that's how I want to think. This time I bring you a song from a group that I found by chance. My son likes to listen to The Hu band (the metal band from Mongolia) and we decided to search for a YouTube playlist with music from similar artists. We found it and pressed play.

At first, we heard songs that were expected even if we didn't know the bands. We got Heilung, Skald, Wardruna, and Mongolian throat singing to mention a few, the funny thing was when we started to listen to a whistle and a banjo and we were like "eh... what's that?" And that's how we found The Dead South and one of their most famous songs to date: In hell I'll be in good company. I immediately liked it and I started to listen to them. It's not what you would think I listen to but damn these guys are good and they are now part of my playlists.
Here is the song, and if I can recommend another one it would be Broken Cowboy.

This song is ideal for those times when you want to take a break from your routine, just sit down and get some really good headphones ... Think about what you've lost and what you really love in this life.

I had the great opportunity to hear this song live, I'm not a big fan of Eagles and had never heard this tune before, but when I first heard this song I fell in love.
Moon shining down through the palms
shadows moving on the sand
somebody whispering the twenty-third psalm
dusty rifle in his trembling hands

somebody trying just to stay alive
he got promises to keep
over the ocean in america
far away and fast asleep

silent stars blinking in the blackness of an endless sky
cold silver satellites, ghostly caravans passing by
galaxies unfolding, new worlds being born
pilgrims and prodigals creeping toward the dawn
but it's a long road out of eden

music blasting from an suv
on a bright and sunny day
rolling down the interstate
in the good ol' usa

having lunch at the petroleum club
smokin' fine cigars and swappin' lives
he said: "gimme 'nother slice o' that barbecued brisket!"
"gimme ‘nother piece o' that pecan pie!"

freeways flickering, cell phones chiming a tune
we're riding to utopia, road map says we'll be arriving soon
captains of the old order clinging to the reins
assuring us these aches inside are only growing pains
but it's a long road out of eden

back home i was so certain
the path was very clear
but now i have to wonder: “what are we doing here?”
I'm not counting on tomorrow
and i can't tell wrong from right
but i'd give anything to be there in your arms tonight

weaving down the american highway
through the litter and the wreckage and the cultural junk
bloated with entitlement, loaded on propaganda
and now we're driving dazed and drunk

been down the road to damascus,
the road to mandalay
met the ghost of caesar on the appian way
he said, "it's hard to stop this bingeing, once you get a taste."
"but the road to empire is a bloody stupid waste."

behold the bitten apple - the power of the tools
but all the knowledge in the world is of no use to fools
and it's a long road out of eden....

Mr. L has had a weird dream several nights, showing him visions of the future world, warnings of man's demise, amazing flights through the stars, a life beneath the waves and cold machines rising from the deep. His nurse's reaction to the revelations is one of indifference, asking him if he has taken his meds, to relax, wondering if he feels okay, even suggesting an increase in the dosage of his medication. Soon after, Mr. L, who reveals that they have spoken to him on the dreams, claims that "The truth is out there/is in here", but his nurse ask "Why should we believe you?" and forces him to take another pill. The one thing that cannot be argued is that you can clearly identify them, either from the first albums like Tales from the Twilight World, all the way to A Night at the Opera. This german band has shown a very interesting approach to revitalize all those stories, myths and tales of old, which for some reason seem to attract the metal community: Arthurian lore, Fantasy in general and perhaps the theme which more identifies them, J. R. R. Tolkien. And here is where Nightfall cuts in.

The album Nightfall in Middle-Earth is a theme album describing the events told in the Silmarillion written by J. R. R. Tolkien, specifically the War of the Jewels. What makes this album such a huge hit (many discovered Blind Guardian through this album, including myself) is the more instrumental and orchestral approach, which perhaps is not as heavy, speedy or powerful as preview releases like Somewhere Far Beyond or Imaginations from the Other Side, but the actual power comes forth from these arrangements mixed in with choir-like vocals, narrations and interludes which make the album a bit long (22 songs crossing the hour-threshold) but quite different as well. Just pay attention to the drums through the whole song Nightfall, the bells in the background of the chorus and the changes in all the different voices and you'll realize how amazing this song is. I could say that it's perhaps one of the most complex songs written by this band.

Nightfall, tells us the story of Fëanor and his seven sons mourning all the mayhem and destruction brought upon by Morgoth and their oath to revenge on him, in spite to the mighty Valar.

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/2/24/2337136/xspf_player_slim.swf?playlist_url=http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/2/24/2337136/BlindGuardian_Nightfall.zip&player_title=Blind Guardian - I was watching today the show on a channel called "TCM". Sad and moving, I remember I cried more than once watching the show and listening to this song on the background. I hope you like it. I did back then and I still do, keeps touching my heart like the first time :'(

Artist: Joe Harnell
Album: The Incredible Hulk theme
Year: 1978Compahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16189200058544256275noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4384263080259966388.post-7972702677557044732009-02-26T08:22:00.000-08:002009-02-26T08:30:29.568-08:00She is my sinWell, I think this was my first Nightwish song. I was listening to the only radio I ever listen to (www.epickrockradio.com) and this song was played. I had an amazing feeling of nostalgia 'cause the last time I heard this song was a couple of years ago (seriously). I felt a little of the same feeling I had that very day I listened to it for the very first time and it gave me chills. The song is not über cool but it has a meaning to me. It's one of my time machines and now I share it with you.

Take heed, dear heart
Once apart, she can touch nor me nor you
Dressed as one
A wolf will betray a lamb

Lead astray the gazers
The razors on your seducing skin
In the meadow of sinful thoughts
Every flower`s perfect

To paradise with pleasure haunted by fear

A sin for him
Desire within
A burning veil
For the bride too dear for him
A sin for him
Desire within
Fall in love with your deep dark sin

I am the Fallen
You are what my sins enclose
Lust is not as creative
As its discovery

To paradise with pleasure haunted by fear

A sin for him...

Bless me, undress me
Pick your prey in a wicked way
God I must confess...
...I do envy the sinners

Artist: Nightwish
Album: Wishmaster
Year: 2000Compahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16189200058544256275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4384263080259966388.post-2693525681418521902009-02-26T07:53:00.000-08:002009-02-26T08:59:25.167-08:00Knight Jumps QueenThis song is pure old school metal!, who can make a song about chess? well Annihilator does :P, this song is plain simple, but great in all ways, the initial bass riff, the cool feeling of guitar riff, well as I say, old school metal(US), I not consider my self a huge fan of this band, but I enjoy this album, maybe this isn't my favorite song of this band, but surely this song is the most iconic of them.

Good evening and welcome to a test of the minds
This match begins as our thoughts begin to grind
I send a pawn towards you, a subtle piece of my attack
Pondering the first move, I guess you'll never know unless you try it

Chorus:
Knight jumps queen, if you know what I mean
Anticipation of the final scene
Knight jumps queen, so get prepared
For this check mate has been happily declared
As the knight jumps the queen

You have made selections, a white castle crumbles at your feet
To counter the men in black, your moves must all be elite
A bishop takes a rook and this cuts him down to size
This is no tailor-made situation
I guess I have some real competition for once

Repeat Chorus

Hours and hours to a stalemate, this game has come to a close
Could it end without a climax, between two exhausted foes
Nighttime's falling on the castle, it's bringing in another day
The concentration was impossible, I never had a doubt I wouldn't win it from you

Repeat Chorus

Artist: Annihilator
Album: Set The World On Fire
Year: 1993Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4384263080259966388.post-18955735898975802672009-02-23T07:27:00.000-08:002009-02-23T08:03:32.684-08:00The Prophecy
Back to the classics :D, this song isn't a classic, but, Iron Maiden surely! I didn't know what to expect since I'm not a big fan of Savatage but this song is really something special. It has Jon Oliva's particular style with background chorus on key places, the voice is a bit aggressive (without being growling) and the rhythm is passionate.
